About the Method

The Solution Method™ is based on developmental skills training (DST) and is an educational intervention that is an integration of neuroscience and attachment theory into skills that facilitate self-regulation.

Participants complete courses that retrain the brain to decrease the frequency and duration of the allostatic response and increase the frequency and duration of homeostasis and well-being.

It was developed at the University of California, San Francisco’s School of Medicine beginning in 1979, first as a pediatric obesity intervention (www.childobesity.com) and later as a program for adults for any the prevention or treatment of stress symptoms.

Research Activities

Researchers are encouraged to learn more about DST and consider research on the program’s application in various public health applications and symptom-specific treatments. Regional interest groups in DST are facilitated by the Institute for Health Solutions with the longer term plan of developing more DST Centers of Excellence.

The national coordinating center for DST research is housed in the Center for Health and Community, University of California, San Francisco. Researchers who are interested in learning more about DST, please contact Laurel Mellin, MA, RD.

Clinical Certification

Providers become certified to facilitate the training in the method. They become certified to provide introductory, advanced and specialty courses and to provide individual coaching and/or group programs. Their programs are based on a method that is protected by copyright, patent pending and trademarks.

Solution Providers are certified at 6 levels, each requiring more expertise in the method and offering a broader range of services to provide. The training is based on completing the program personally as well as training in the clinical application of the method.

Providers begin with 14 hours of training, including 8 hours of introductory experiential training (Wired for Joy Telegroup) and 6 hours of science and clinical overview. After becoming certified at Level 1, many find they want to expand their services based on the method.

All Certified Solution Providers are part of a community of providers who contribute to the development and dissemination of these tools. They receive discounts on introductory client materials, access to promotional materials, consultation and support, seminars, cluster groups and professional DST meetings. They have the option of including their contact information on the website’s Provider Finder. All providers are members of a regional center for professional support and community.

We welcome you to explore becoming a Certified Solution Provider. If your situation or interests are not consistent with seeking certification at this time, we hope you will support the method by sharing it with colleagues or referring participants to the program.
